Grand Hotel Plaza Rome

Eternal City / Eternal Love / Eternal Grand Hotel Plaza

In this article, dear readers, you will learn more about one of Rome’s most famous historic hotels.

“All roads lead to Rome” is a well-known saying, which I’m rephrasing as “All roads lead to the Grand Hotel Plaza.” There are many good reasons for a trip to the Eternal City, a place that uniquely blends history and the present: Vatican City, the diverse museums, the ancient churches, and the world-famous Trevi Fountain, to name just a few highlights.

One of the main reasons, however, should be the five-star Grand Hotel Plaza in the heart of ancient, baroque Rome. This historic luxury hotel, just a short distance from the renowned Via Condotti and the Piazza di Spagna occupying a 19th-century Roman palazzo, captivates with its location right in the heart of the authentic Via del Corso and fulfills all the essential criteria for an elegant home away from home with first-class service in the ancient metropolis.

The Grand Hotel Plaza in Rome, a hotel with the Italian flag designation, strikes the perfect balance between luxury hospitality and history, and knows exactly how to blend nostalgia and tradition with charm and elegance into a harmonious whole. Furthermore, the historic hotel embodies, lives and celebrates the epitome of cordiality and hospitality. I would even go so far as to say that this hospitality is in the DNA of the Grand Hotel Plaza.

La Dolce Vita against the breathtaking backdrop of the colorful, blooming, fragrant and elevated gardens of Villa Borghese, the exclusive Via Condotti, the Piazza Spagna, and the Trevi Fountain – these are the paradisiacal surroundings of the Grand Hotel Plaza in the Eternal City.

GRAND HOTEL PLAZA ROME: ARRIVAL

Under a blue sky and full of anticipation, we get out of the car. (The bellhop opens the limousine door for us with a smile after a nearly fifty-minute transfer from Fiumicino Airport.)

Beautiful, the entrance area, the time-honored staircase, the stucco as well as the old paintings and mirrors.  Since I am fluent in Italian, the language of my ancestors, I am proud to be able to speak Italian.

We are immediately greeted by the Matteo and after a professional and cordial check-in, we are accompanied to the booked suites with terrace, where a handwritten welcome message and a generous fruit basket were already waiting for us.

You, dear readers, will feel like being in a fairy tale, too when you spend a few nights there.

GRAND HOTEL PLAZA: HISTORIC ROOMS AND SUITES

The 180 elegantly and comfortably furnished historic rooms and (junior) suites feature Wi-Fi, air conditioning, a large flat-screen TV, a safe, a minibar with free natural mineral water and free sparkling water, slippers and bathrobes from the luxury brand Etro. The marble bathrooms offer a nostalgic interior paired with modern accents. Each room and suite tells its own story.

Antique furniture combined with modern amenities is a highlight in every accommodation. The diverse room categories start with the classic rooms, which measure a modest 15 square meters but feature beautifully refined furnishings with silk curtains. The superior rooms (with or without a view) offer 20 square meters and redefined, refined details. While the 25-square-meter deluxe rooms are characterized by casual luxury paired with charismatic style, the 30-square-meter deluxe terrace rooms also feature a wonderful terrace. Finally, the 40-square-meter grand deluxe rooms round up the diverse range of accommodations.

The spacious junior suites (with or without a view) all feature beautiful hardwood floors and handcrafted furniture (also found in most rooms). I recommend booking a junior suite with a private terrace. The panoramic view is guaranteed, and with a little imagination, you can almost see the Pope waving from afar. The Loft Suite with a private terrace and a view of St. Peter’s Basilica or the obelisk in Piazza del Popolo is also a good choice. Of course, there is also the pinnacle of luxury accommodations: the suites, such as the famous San Carlo Al Corso Suite or the 100-square-meter Pietro Mascagni Suite located on the ground floor. The composer Pietro Mascagni resided in this magnificent suite from 1927 to 1947 and composed the world-famous opera Nerone. On the 6th floor, the 130-square-meter St. Peter’s Basilica Presidential Suite literally places the Eternal City at your feet.

Worth mentioning here are the rooms and suites with connecting doors for families. During our first stay in November 2025, we booked a Junior Suite with a connecting door to a Grand Deluxe Room overlooking the lively Via del Corso. Take a look at the photos – they speak for a successful stay.

On our second visit in late April 2026, we chose two junior suites with a connecting door and breathtaking terraces. Here, too, the photos speak for themselves – a perfect stay.

GRAND HOTEL PLAZA ROME: HISTORICAL FACTS

For a century, the Grand Hotel Plaza has been housed in the Palazzo Lozzano, a building named after the count and banker Antonio. This renowned banker commissioned the construction in the mid-19th century. Built in 1837 by the famous architect Antonio Sarti, the building is located across from the beautiful Church of San Carlo. Behind the Grand Hotel Plaza, which was transformed into the “Albergo di Roma” during the 19th century, lie the important Roman Catholic church of Trinità dei Monti and Villa Medici, the historic Renaissance building on the Pincio Hill. In 1902, architect Edgardo Negri laid the foundation stone for today´s Grand Hotel Plaza. Thanks to Piero Mongiardino, a gifted interior designer and set designer, the Grand Hotel Plaza exudes freedom, sophistication, worldliness, elegance and nobility.

Every time I step into the opulent LOBBY with its precious marble floors, Murano glass chandelier, vaulted ceilings, ornate tapestries, antique furniture, stained-glass windows, historical portraits, marble busts, and the intricately designed ceiling with its textured frame, I feel like one of the (un)crowned heads of this earth who have also visited the Grand Hotel Plaza. Among these personalities are Umberto and Margherita di Piemonte, Pope Pius IX, Gabriele d’Annunzio, and Charles de Gaulle.

You, too, dear readers, will feel as if you are in a Roman palazzo with imperial flair when you stay there. The Grand Hotel Plaza in Rome embodies and lives the very essence of Roman grand hotel culture.

GRAND HOTEL PLAZA ROM: CULINARY DELIGHTS

On two evenings, we treat ourselves to a meal at the hotel’s own restaurant, Mascagni on the ground floor and at the breathtaking terrace on the fith floor of restaurant Academia di Francia. The elegant and regal atmosphere makes my Italian heart beat faster, while the delicious Mediterranean gourmet dishes delight my discerning palate. Both restaurants offer a European menu that changes with the seasons, featuring classics of Roman tradition refined with fresh, regional, and modern touches.

The breakfast buffet also leaves nothing to be desired and so the day could not start better. Here, too, the service exudes that Dolce Vita feeling.

As fantastic as the Grand Hotel Plaza is, the diverse sights of the Italian capital entice you every day with a new highlight. During the day, I recommend letting yourself be enchanted by the multifaceted charm of Rom, and in the late afternoon, let yourself be delighted in the lobby or on the sun terrace with a fantastic cocktail or an exquisite glass of wine followed by dinner.

During our four-day stay, we visited the following place.

  • The gardens of Villa Borghese, home to a museum housing one of the world’s most valuable private art collections. For art connoisseurs and collectors, the Villa Borghese Gallery is “the world’s most beautiful private museum”
  • Via Veneto – shopping street
  • The narrow streets at the foot of the Spanish Steps are also a true shopping paradise (Via Condotti, Via Frattina, Via      Borgognona…)
  • Trastevere, the artists’ quarter
  • Campo d’ Fiori
  • Piazza Navona
  • Vatican and the Sistine Chapel
  • Castel Sant’Angelo, which now houses a museum
  • Capitoline Hill
  • Jewish Quarter
  • via Sacra, the Roman Forum, and the Colosseum
  • Trevi Fountain

The photos are in the slideshow below.

If we’d had more time, we would have gone to Tivoli—just as the patricians once did. Emperor Hadrian built his summer residence there, “Villa Adriana,” which is now a UNESCO World Heritage Site.

VACATION LIKE THE CELEBRITIES. The Grand Hotel Plaza is “the place to be” in the Eternal City, the hotspot for local high society, and definitely a destination for the stylish world traveler. The spirit and lifestyle at the Grand Hotel Plaza in Rome never cease to fascinate me.

Grand Hotel Plaza Rome – Additional Amenities

Those who have already read my books know that a telescope is depicted on every cover. On our honeymoon to Mauritius, I discovered a telescope in our suite and immediately knew that this would become my logo. It symbolizes foresight and enables me to always look into the distance. Subsequently, I repeatedly discovered such an optical instrument in many of the hotels where we stayed, and to my surprise, the Grand Hotel Plaza had one, too.

Fitness center, conference room, business center, concierge service. The dedicated concierge loves Rome and acts as an ambassador for his city. He strives to anticipate his guests’ every need. He opens doors that are normally kept closed, arranges a private jet within an hour, or provides recommendations for excursions and restaurants.

Unfortunately, it is time to say goodbye, but the next stay in November 2026 is already booked.
