Hotels in Brisbane & Melbourne

Brisbane

Unfortunately, Brisbane does not score with real luxury hotels. Therefore, I can only recommend the Sofitel Brisbane Central with direct access to the central station because of its location – in the business district CBD. However, it is a far cry from the “luxurious, French hospitality” with which it presents itself on the Internet. Although I was firmly promised that our suite would be ready for occupancy at 6:00 am, we had to wait for an hour. The Emirates crew checked in immediately. In general, the hotel is booked by several airlines for pilots and flight attendants.

Furthermore, I had a package delivered to the hotel – but it could not be found! The concierge assured me that my delivery had never arrived, although I could show the delivery confirmation from Qantas Airlines. In the end, the concierge only stole my time with his constant calls and abstruse claims. An absolute no-go!

The Junior Suite with separate bedroom and living/study is spacious with fantastic views of the city and Anzac Square. However, the large bathroom showed signs of wear and tear.

We didn’t use the inviting outdoor pool because we didn’t have the time.

Dinner at Thyme was excellent, though you have to appreciate the very cold air conditioning! Although it really marred the enjoyment of my meal, I couldn’t resist the dessert creations.

Insider tip: Next time I’ll visit the W (I can recommend the W Abu Dhabi – Yas Island – directly at the Grand Prix race track) or the Emporium Hotel Southbank.

Melbourne

There are numerous luxury hotels in Melbourne, but as so often, no true luxury pearls. Despite some shortcomings, only the Park Hyatt and the Crown Towers convinced me. Ultimately, it’s up to you whether you prefer to stay at the Park Hyatt near the Victorian landscape garden, Fitzroy Gardens, or at the Crown Towers on the south bank of the Yarra River. The iconically striking Crown Towers is connected by an atrium to the Crown, a hotel and entertainment and casino complex. The fascinating lobby with its grandiose Christmas tree flows smoothly into this atrium.

Our executive Club Suite 2309 – a corner suite located on the 23rd floor – including a spacious marble bathroom, offers good city views from the living room and study and unobstructed river views from the bedroom.

I didn’t test the Crown Spa, as I soon lost my desire to swim in the crowded 25-meter indoor pool. The entire pool area offers mass instead of class. The Crown Towers does try to protect its guests from the onslaught of the entertainment and casino complex, but it doesn’t always succeed. That’s why booking a suite is an absolute must, as it’s the only way you’ll have access to the dignified Crystal Club lounge and dine in peace.

The restaurant scene is eclectic and the restaurants are always fully booked. You will have to book in advance and the flow of guests should not disturb you. I can recommend the Conservatory. There you will enjoy an absolutely unique buffet. In addition, you have a direct view of the evening torches in flame optics on the car-free river promenade.
