The Peninsula New York

New York’s luxury hotel industry is very diverse. Since we only spent a weekend in the city that never sleeps, I only selected and tested one really luxurious hotel. The choice fell on The Peninsula New York, because this luxury hotel chain already fascinated me in Hong Kong (see my February blog), in Shanghai (see my April blog), in Beijing (see my June blog) and also in Beverly Hills.

Located on the world-renowned Fifth Avenue at the corner of 55th Street, The Peninsula New York has been part of the swanky Peninsula Group since 1988. In 1998, the Beaux-Arts style building – designed in the early 20th century – was successfully renovated at a cost of nearly $50 million. The landmarked Art Nouveau façade is impressively illuminated during the Christmas season.

As for the 182 rooms and 55 suites in this luxury gem, we were left with only one Deluxe room because of our impromptu booking. This 45-square-meter room features timeless elegance, luxury, and a breathtaking view of Fifth Avenue and Trump Tower. Of course, all rooms and suites have the same technical features (in-house in-room technology) as at The Peninsula Hong Kong, The Peninsula Shanghai or The Peninsula Beijing. The Peninsula Spa (3,250 square meters) with Finnish sauna, steam bath, hamam and fitness center offers pure relaxation thanks to the beauty treatments, massages and body and facial treatments offered there. It is an oasis of calm in the middle of this hectic and noisy city. You can also enjoy a leisurely swim in the indoor pool.

The Clement restaurant serves contemporary American cuisine, while the rooftop bar Salon de Ning with spectacular views on the 23rd floor welcomes New York high society as well as hotel guests in summer. Incidentally, since last year this bar has been converted into a cozy winter chalet for the cold months, offering typical Engadine specialties. This hotel bar is – summer and winter – the hotspot in the Big Apple! In addition, the hotel has a bar adjacent to the typical restaurant called Bar at Clement.

Finally, the privileged location can’t be topped. Both leisure and business travelers appreciate the prime location in Midtown Manhattan – right on Fifth Avenue, New York’s glamorous shopping, business and cultural mile. The flagship stores of the most famous fashion designers and jewelers are just a few steps away, the famous MoMa (Museum of Modern Art) is just around the corner, Central Park is nearby, and Rockefeller Center with its “Top of the Rock” observation deck is less than a ten-minute walk away.
